Criss Cross Jazz 1206 CD
Ralph Peterson Quintet
The Art Of War
On The Art Of War,
his Criss Cross debut,
drummer-composer Ralph Peterson
returns here to the two-horns and rhythm format
with which he kicked off his recording career,
deploying an approach that blends the drive of Art Blakey
with the edginess of Miles Davis.
Joined by an ensemble of youngsters -
Jeremy Pelt (trumpet),
Jimmy Greene (tenor and soprano sax),
Orrin Evans (piano) and
Eric Revis (bass) -
whose ability to dip into the tradition and move forward equips them
to navigate the primal complexities of Peterson's sonic landscape,
the drummer offers his swingingest date in years.
