Herlin Riley Quintet
Watch What You're Doing
Watch What You're Doing
is the debut recording of Herlin Riley,
the 42-year-old master New Orleans drummer
who spent five years with Ahmad Jamal,
six years with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet and Septet,
and has been the drummer-of-choice of Wynton Marsalis'
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for the past decade.
Joined by a choice ensemble of LCJO colleagues,
trumpeter Ryan Kisor,
trombonist Wycliffe Gordon,
saxist Victor Goines,
pianist Farid Barron and
bassist Rodney Whitaker,
Riley conjures a profound meditation on the rhythmic timeline
befitting his griotic status as an improviser
who has lived the tradition from the inside-out.
